Description
An original, hand-signed acrylic on canvas artwork by Simon Lee Robson.
A large-scale exercise in the refinement of artistic technique, Robson’s artwork The Hands of Lazarus highlights evocative imagery and refined craftsmanship. The painting captures the raw physicality of Lazarus’s exhumation, focusing on the tension and struggle embodied in the hands, both his and those around him. These hands, grasping and lifting, symbolise the fragile boundary between life and death, grounding the miraculous moment in human, tactile experience. The artwork emphasises the visceral, corporeal nature of resurrection, where physical touch becomes the bridge between the sacred and the earthly.
In this original acrylic painting on linen canvas, Robson has built the surface through 20–30 delicate scumble glazes, with varnish integrated throughout the layering process. Each layer has been meticulously applied to cultivate subtle shifts of light, depth, and atmosphere, revealing nuances that continue to evolve with the viewer’s gaze. The result is a luminous, living surface, where every glaze contributes to the painting’s singular presence and character.
Presented with gallery-wrapped linen canvas over reclaimed timber stretchers, with reclaimed nails and intentionally weathered linen edges. This deliberately timeworn presentation complements the collection’s dialogue with the Old Masters, celebrating the beauty of natural imperfections, honest material character, and handcrafted construction, while the contemporary painted surface retains its clarity, depth, and refinement.
