Description

A giclée on canvas, hand-signed, limited edition artwork by Timothy Langton.

This chilling piece captures the haunting moment at Covent Garden Station, where the boundaries between the living and the dead seem to blur. The dark, deserted platforms, the flickering lights, and the ghostly presence of William Terriss all combine to create a scene of suspense and supernatural mystery. The piece draws viewers into the unsettling world of the London Underground, where history and legend intertwine, and the past can sometimes come back to haunt the present.

This giclée on canvas is presented in a black float frame and is ready to hang.

The piece is also available as part of a set.

A large-format edition is also available.

The Story Behind the Artwork
1972: In the eerie stillness of Covent Garden Station, long after the last train had departed, the quiet was broken by an encounter that would leave a lasting impression on a young lift operator, Christopher Joseph Clifford. It was a routine closing, the kind he had done countless times before. As he prepared to lock up for the night, a flicker of movement caught his eye. Thinking he had mistakenly trapped a passenger inside, he turned, ready to offer an apology. But what he saw made his heart skip a beat, a tall man, dressed in old-fashioned clothing, stood before him. The stranger wore a black long waistcoat and a top hat, his presence both imposing and out of place in the modern underground station.

Startled but maintaining his composure, the lift operator began to apologise for the inconvenience, reaching for his keys to let the man out. Yet, in the brief moment it took him to turn back, the mysterious figure had vanished without a trace. Confused and unsettled, the operator went and searched both platforms, but the man was nowhere to be found.

It wasn’t until he shared the strange experience with a colleague that the true eeriness of the encounter became clear. His colleague, intrigued, showed him an old photograph of the long-deceased William Terriss, a famed actor of the Adelphi Theatre, tragically murdered in 1897. The lift operator’s blood ran cold as he recognised the man in the photo as the very figure he had seen that night.
