Description
An acrylic on linen, hand-signed, original artwork by Simon Lee Robson.
An epic, large-scale exercise in the refinement of artistic technique, Robson's artwork The Hands of Lazarus (2010) highlights evocative imagery and refined craftsmanship. The painting captures the raw physicality of Lazarus’s exhumation, focusing on the tension and struggle embodied in the hands, both his and those around him. These hands, grasping and lifting, symbolise the fragile boundary between life and death, grounding the miraculous moment in human, tactile experience. The artwork emphasises the visceral, corporeal nature of resurrection, where physical touch becomes the bridge between the sacred and the earthly.
In this acrylic on linen, Robson has built up the surface through 20-30 delicate coats of scumble glaze, with varnish integrated and layered throughout. Each layer has been meticulously applied to cultivate subtle shifts of light, depth, and atmosphere, revealing nuances that evolve with the viewer’s gaze. The layering creates a luminous, living surface, where every coat contributes to the painting’s singular presence and character. While the edges show minor signs of aging due to storage, the main painted surface remains in excellent condition, preserving the work’s integrity and brilliance.
