Description
An acrylic on canvas, hand-signed, original artwork by Simon Lee Robson.
A spectacular large-scale study of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio's The Deposition (Deposizione) (1600-1604), also known as The Entombment of Christ. The painting portrays the somber and emotional moment of Christ's body being placed in the tomb, marked by dramatic chiaroscuro and deeply human expressions of grief and reverence.
In this acrylic on canvas, Robson has built up the surface through 20-30 delicate coats of scumble glaze, with varnish integrated and layered throughout. Each layer has been meticulously applied to cultivate subtle shifts of light, depth, and atmosphere, revealing nuances that evolve with the viewer’s gaze. The layering creates a luminous, living surface, where every coat contributes to the painting’s singular presence and character. Slight warping may be present along the stretcher bars due to storage, a testament to the tactile nature of the materials and the process.
