Description
An original, hand-signed acrylic on canvas artwork by Simon Lee Robson.
A large-scale study of Sebastiano del Piombo’s The Raising of Lazarus (1517-1519). The painting captures the dramatic moment when Jesus commands Lazarus to rise from the dead, emphasising the raw emotions and physicality of the scene through striking contrasts of light and shadow.
In this original acrylic painting on linen canvas, Robson has built the surface through 20–30 delicate scumble glazes, with varnish integrated throughout the layering process. Each layer has been meticulously applied to cultivate subtle shifts of light, depth, and atmosphere, revealing nuances that continue to evolve with the viewer’s gaze. The result is a luminous, living surface, where every glaze contributes to the painting’s singular presence and character.
Presented with gallery-wrapped linen canvas over reclaimed timber stretchers, with reclaimed nails and intentionally weathered linen edges. This deliberately timeworn presentation complements the collection’s dialogue with the Old Masters, celebrating the beauty of natural imperfections, honest material character, and handcrafted construction, while the contemporary painted surface retains its clarity, depth, and refinement.
