What is an Intaglio Print?

Intaglio is a distinguished printmaking technique in which a design is engraved, etched, or incised into a metal plate, typically copper or zinc. Ink is applied into the recessed lines, and the plate’s surface is meticulously wiped clean. Paper is then pressed onto the plate under high pressure, transferring the ink and creating the print. The result is a work of art with depth, texture, and subtle variations unique to each impression.

Original vs. Reproductive Prints

Whether an intaglio print is considered an “original” or a “reproduction” depends on the artist’s intent and the process used:

Original Prints:

Artist-Created Plates: When the artist designs, engraves, or etches the plate specifically for the intaglio process, the resulting prints are original artworks.

Limited Editions: Artists often produce a finite number of prints (an edition), each signed and numbered, emphasising their uniqueness.

Hand-Pulled Prints: Each impression is inked and pressed by hand, introducing subtle variations that make every print distinctive.

Reproductive Prints:

Mechanical Reproductions: Prints made using an intaglio process to replicate pre-existing artworks, such as paintings or drawings, are classified as reproductions.
Commercial Printing: Mass-produced prints using intaglio-like techniques are not considered original artworks.

Intaglio as a True Artistic Medium

Historical masters including Francisco Goya, Albrecht Dürer, and Rembrandt used intaglio techniques to create original, collectible works. These prints are valued not just for their image but for the tangible imprint of the artist’s creative process, where every step, from plate preparation to final pressing, is under the artist’s control.

Market and Museum Perspective

Art Market: Limited edition intaglio prints are highly sought after and collectible, often regarded as originals rather than mere reproductions.

Museums: Original intaglio prints are displayed alongside drawings and paintings, recognised as authentic artistic expressions.

When the Print Becomes the Original

Intaglio prints are unquestionably originals when conceived as part of an artist’s deliberate creative process. Conversely, if the process is employed to replicate pre-existing artworks or for commercial production, they are reproductions. The distinction hinges entirely on the artist’s involvement and intent.

At Arte Delux, Simon Lee Robson’s original intaglio works, unseen for over twenty years, The Black Rain Engravings | 2024 and The Black Rain Engravings: Part II | 2025, are recognised as original artworks rather than limited edition prints. Here, the copper plates served solely as tools; the final printed intaglios represent the definitive originals. With the original plates lost or destroyed, these prints are the sole surviving manifestations of the artist’s intent, authentic, unique, and collectible originals rather than reproductions.
